Quick Review based on the first hour of gameplay:

Given that Watch Dogs Legion is upon us, I thought it might be good to pull Watch Dogs out of my backlog and finally give it a spin.

The first hour of gameplay was mostly story. Right away, the game struck me as mature in nature. A story about someone caught up in something much larger and using whatever they can to get by. In this case that’s the “hacking” mechanic in the game which to me gives the game its own style and unique feel. First, the mechanic game me a sense that world was alive with activity because there is basically a story to almost every NPC that you can see. Secondly, the mechanic gives the entire game a stealthy feeling even if you aren’t always performing stealthily. In fact, much of the action is where you aren’t in stealth. I thought to myself, for someone being stealthy, it seems that you are constantly exposed. And that’s the balance in this game that it seems at least at this initial point that you are striving to maintain. And, you are usually maintaining this balance through diversion.

There are a lot of side missions and a main campaign. I appreciated right away that the main campaign is easy to follow. There are introductions to side missions throughout the main story that are clever and keep the immersion. If you keep from being distracted you can easily return to the main campaign. I found it interesting that some missions arise straight out of the mechanic of hacking peoples phones which at the beginning seems to be the main way to earn currency and therefore necessary.
I enjoyed this and while there are a lot of open world games to play with many side missions and quests, I feel like I have enjoyed the first hour (even if not the godfather like atmosphere) much more than I thought I would and look forward to continuing the campaign. It has some of the typical game elements where you unlock areas of the city by specific missions and then the area becomes available for further gameplay.
All in all 8/10.
