Water, Water, but Not Everywhere (Likable Science)
Water, Water, but Not Everywhere; Its Supply and Purity is Increasingly at Issue (Likable Science). The host for this show was Jay Fidell. The guest was Ethan Allen.
The discussion was: Scientist Ethan Allen helps us understand the changes in water in the 21st century, including issues of availability and purity. Water is absolutely required for life, and for agriculture. The effects of climate change. The question of infrastructure, such as what happened in Flint, Michigan. The lack of water in the American West, and disputes that arise there and in other places around the world. Who regulates, and who tests these days. Are microbes, antigens and contaminants more threatening. What is the state of science and technology to purify water and save water or to create drinking water from sea water. How the lack of water creates deserts and forces populations to migrate. Will water get more scarce and less pure. Will the lack of clean water lead to international disputes. How will these be resolved. Will there be water wars. Clean water has always been plentiful in Hawaii, but will that change, and will we need to build facilities for desalination, and how much will that cost.
The takeaway was: Insuring an adequate supply of clean water requires the technology to find it, purity it, protect and transport it. Given the increasing demand for clean water and the diminishing supply of it, every community and society must plan how to to do these things going forward.
