Wavebird? LegacyGC? BattlerGC? Original? What's the Best GameCube Controller?
The Nintendo GameCube introduced a number of firsts for the company. It was the first Nintendo system to use optical disks for games. It was the first to offer progressive scan. It was Nintendo's first system that had an OEM wireless controller. Speaking of the controller, the GameCube had and has some of the best controller options, form the Original wired controller, the Wireless Wavebird, and even modern takes such as the LegacyGC & BattlerGC. So let's take a look at some of the best GameCube controller options or there.
Original Wired
I loved the original GameCube controller! I always thought it was super comfortable, had great buttons and triggers, and it was just so responsive. The original had built in rumble, where the predecessor N64 controller required an external rumble pack.
Wavebird
Take everything I loved about the GameCube stock controller and make it wireless, and you get the Wavebird. While it was a little more of a chonky boy, it never felt much differently in the hand. One major difference with the Wavebird, however, was the omission of rumble support, which is a bummer.
LegacyGC
Retro-Bit makes some of my favorite controllers, and when I saw the LegacyGC I knew they had done it again. Designed for the Game Boy Player, it combined the buttons of a GameCube controller with a more traditional and larger D-pad. It plays a lot like a SNES controller, and that's a good thing.
BattlerGC
Take the Wavebird, combine it with modern controller design queues, and add rumble support and you get the Retro Fighters BattlerGC. Definitely inspired by the Brawler64, the BattlerGC is super comfortable and really a terrific controller. This is what I currently use when I play GameCube games
