Every Sunday I’m streaming a Mystery Game after the Gothic/Bioshock session which precedes it. The aim is to work through some of the hidden gems within my collection that I’ve either picked up or been kindly gifted and gain a good impression of what it’s about.
This will help me to decide whether to continue it in the future, be it via a stream, LP, or just privately for myself.
This week’s its UnderRail, and old-school style RPG with a tangible Fallout 1&2 feel to it.
The game looks to strike the balance between complexity and accessibility pretty well. There seems to be a lot too this game to make it involving – crafting, different damages, psi abilities – but none of it seems overwhelming and everything’s laid out and presented pretty well.
I may well keep playing it to see if the plot and/or dialogue add to the solid base of the mechanics,. The first impression I had of this game was that it’s got a good foundation for a game to be built upon, but it needs more than this to be a really great game.
