The Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC), also known as the Local Fluff, is an interstellar cloud roughly 30 light-years (9.2 pc) across, through which the Solar System is moving. This feature overlaps a region around the Sun referred to as the solar neighborhood. The galactic area is littered with heavy elements resulting from the explosion of super novas over the lifespan of the universe. It is estimated that the Solar System entered the LIC within the past 10,000 years.

A supernova is a powerful and luminous explosion of a star. This transient astronomical event occurs during the last evolutionary stages of a massive star or when a white dwarf is triggered into runaway nuclear fusion.
