Military veterans undertook an 18-hour pilgrimage to Belgium to unveil the first-ever plaque honouring the 15,600 West Indies soldiers who served during the First World War.

Until now, no mention has been made of the service of thousands of soldiers from the British West Indies Regiment at St George's Memorial Church in Ypres – on the land where so many fought and 1,500 members of the regiment lost their lives during the conflict.

Almost 100 soldiers, veterans, musicians, faith leaders and community champions travelled to the church to unveil the plaque in honour of their sacrifice, including the British Army's highest-ranked black officer, Brigadier Karl Harris, and the first black colonel, Andy Allen.
