Here’s the situation, a contaminated energy drink has turned everyone into mutants. In Sunset Overdrive there are a variety of different mutant enemy types. From the big, the small, to the outright strange. But how exactly are they people turning into mutants? From some in game cutscenes, the transformation is pretty quick. Unlike zombies, these mutants seem to be alive. In real life there is a fungus (Ophiocordyceps unilateralis) that takes over ants bodies. It has near complete control of its motor functions before finally killing the host. These mutants don’t seem to operate in the same way. It appears to be more of a disease rather than a means to an end.
Real energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine and sugar to give you that buzz. Artificial sweeteners trick the brain into forgetting that sweetness contains energy, making people more likely to keep drinking. This can contribute to the mutants restless chase to attack humans and can be attributed to their continued need for more. It’s possible that if the energy drink itself can be removed from the equation, the mutants would not have enough energy to continue. According the the manufactures website “Overcharge Delirium XT” contains 87 grams of sugar and quote Tons of caffeine. Also the nutritional values are based on a 5,000 calorie diet as opposed to the standard 2,000 calorie diet. This alone should start to raise some alarms and definitely some concern.
The way the body mutates almost look like a cancerous tumor. These tumors grow by cells continuing to divide uncontrollably, but they still require blood vessels to continue to supply oxygen to the region. Coincidentally, when the growths begin to take over, orange wounds begin to open. Raw blood is red, the energy drink is yellowish which may mean that the energy drinks’ active ingredients first attack the bloodstream and is then transferred throughout the body to the skin and mouth. The human body contains about 5.6 liters of blood. At a rate of 83 gallons per hour your body takes about one minute to fully circulate blood throughout the body. But what would be the cancer causing ingredient? The most likely culprits are hydrogenated oils. Excessive levels of Omega-6 fatty acids can cause heart disease and an increase in various types of cancer, especially skin cancer. Since we already can’t trust the nutritional information on the back, it may be a phantom ingredient added by the manufacturer. But what if it wasn’t the contents of the drink as much as the makeup of the can that was causing issues. A chemical called bisphenol-A or BPA lines almost all canned food cans. Paired with acidic energy drinks, the BPA tends to leach into the contents more rapidly. In 2013 a study was published suggesting the BPA affects the way genes work inside the brain. Therefore the mutant’s actions are likely caused by changes in the brain. Damage to their parietal lobe can causes the mutants to focus on things that require the most attention. If this were the case, it would be better to stay quiet and still. Damage to the hippocampus can cause retrograde amnesia, causing them to lose all memories. It would make the mutants forget faster than they can remember. Next, damage to the circuits that connect portions of the brain that creates emotions can mean that it’s more difficult for them to control their anger. And lastly, damage to the arcuate fasciculus, the area responsible for language, causes the mutants to not only have trouble producing anything more than a groan but also lack the ability to understand language. Luckily if it is caused by a form of cancer that damages the brain, it likely isn’t contagious.. This accounts for the fact that players can come into contact with the creatures, no problem. To beat a disease like this, non conventional treatments would be needed. For example vinyl coupled with burning special incense, and copper coated lead injections all lead to a suppression and eventual discontinuation of all motor functions for mutants.
The question of the day is, what’s your weapon of choice for fighting these mutants? Go ahead and leave your response in the comments right below the like button and remember to be creative. Anyways guys this was just a really quick look at the mutants from Sunset Overdrive. Don’t forget to subscribe if you’re new, thanks for watching.
