Disclaimer: Notch was not the sole owner of Mojang and the purchase was both cash and stock. This video is for entertainment purposes only. Thanks :D
According to Microsoft the game Minecraft and it’s developers Mojang are worth a whopping $2.5 Billion. To put it into perspective, Amazon purchased Twitch for $970M, Disney purchased Star Wars for $4.05B, and Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19B.
So how big exactly is 2.5 billion?
If someone said they’d give you as much money as you could count, meaning if you counted to 10 you’d get $10, how long do you think you could count? It would take 11 days, 13 hours, and 47 min to count to a million. It takes 79 years to count to 2.5 billion. And that’s the case in which each number took a second to say but in reality, the larger the number gets, the longer it takes to say. Taking this into account, it would take about 482 years, 107 days, 19 hours and 41 min!
Minecraft for the Xbox 360 is limited to a 7.4 million square meter world that’s 862 by 862 blocks. Minecraft for the Xbox One is 36x larger with 26,749,584 square meter and a world that’s 5,172 by 5,172. But a world with 2.5 billion square meter would be 3,400x larger with a world that’s 50,000 by 50,000 blocks. Though as large as 2.5 billion is, on PC the game can get as large as 90 trillion blocks before things get super weird. In other words, it’s only about 0.0028% the maximum size of a Minecraft for PC which is FUCKING huge!
So back to the cash. $2.5B in US pennies would fill 43 Olympic sized swimming pools. If you were to stack them on top of each other it would tower about 380,000 km high weighing in at 625 million kilos. If you were paid in one dollar bills you could cover 26 square kilometers.
The creator of Minecraft, Notch, was born on June 1st 1979. From his birth until September 15th 2014 his average pay was $2.24 per second. If Notch was walking down the side of the road and saw a $20 bill, in the time it took him to bend down and pick it up, he would have made an additional $24 bucks. Meaning if every waking moment was spent on the the production of Minecraft, bending down for that 20 would have costed him money. To put in into perspective, if he gave away a million dollars per day, he could continue that for 6.8 years straight!
In the Minecraft world there are a ton of super rare and super not rare materials. With each block being 1 meter by 1 meter you could buy 24 million solid blocks of coal, 227 thousand blocks of iron, 52 thousand blocks of TNT, 11 thousand blocks of obsidian, 3 blocks of gold, 22% of a block of emeralds or only 1.4% blocks of diamond.
Although you can literally never count to 2 and a half billion, just remember that that the time it takes you to pick up a $20 bill you could be working on your billion dollar idea.
With that said, congratulation to Notch and everyone over at Mojang! Let’s just hope Microsoft doesn’t F*** this one up!
