The original, native name for Celtic Britain was/ is Alban. (The Roman version of this was “Albion”) Alban is the Gaelic name for the island (and also in Brythonic Celtic/ Welsh too). It is taken to mean “White Mountain” - possibly referring to the White Cliffs of Dover - as they would be seen from the continent of Europe. (Some have also felt it might refer to the Scottish Highlands). Alban is still the native Irish/ Scottish Gaelic name for Scotland. With the invasion of the Anglo-Saxons into southern Britain, then Alban became re-trenched to mean northern Britain (i.e Scotland). Britain (in Gaelic) - or Prydain (in Brythonic/ Welsh) later became the name for the island of Britain
