“Do not go gentle into that good night, old age should burn and rave at close of day; rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, and learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” That was a poem by Dylan Thomas. A well known poem, it was written in 1947 in Florence for his father who was sick, and was a plea to not accept death and maintain a zeal for life. It would eventually be published in 1951, four years after it was penned. Why am I giving you a history lesson? Why am I telling you about some old poem? Because it holds meaning. The meaning being to not accept death so easily, and to fight to the bloody end to live. Even in the face of sure death, fight to live, even if for only one more day. This is the sort of situation Naruto and his new Senju brethren face every day. Born on the field of battle, this too is where they’re destined to die. But all the while, as that dark night falls, they rage against the dying of the light. When Kawarama passed, it was Hahirama who held his brothers together. And when Itama passed, it was Naruto holding Hashirama together. Just as John Donne wrote, “No man is an island entirely of itself”. Each of us have needs, and though we believe we’re strong enough on our own, the Book of Genesis tells us that it is not good for man to be alone. We all depend upon each other. We fight against the dying of the light, and sometimes we win. Sometimes we lose. All the time, it is the love and care of those nearby who carry us through. It seems I’m feeling highly philosophical today. The bottom line is, our heroes have had it rough. They’ve experienced rough things, and they haven’t yet finished. More tough times will tough them, but if they persevere, maybe, just maybe, they won’t have to go into that dark night.
