Historically, Zhuge Liangs protege was assigned to defend Jieting but his disasterous leadership led his defeat. By ignoring advice and camping on a hill he was surrounded by Weis Zhang He which led to Shus catastrophic defeat. The loss of Jieting forced Zhuge Liang to abandon the expedition for Tianshui all together and retreat to Hanzhong.
