Room tone is one of the most important things yet its often overlooked, today were looking at What is room tone and why you should use it in 2 minutes
Room tone honestly isn't all that hard to make or to use but most productions don't wanna take the time out of the shoot to record 30 - 60 seconds of it. So this video is to show HOW to use room tone, what it does for the finished video, and how it can help the overall production of your projects. if you couldn't tell, this is basically an all encompassing video on room tone.

This is what Media College says about room tone.

In film and video production, the term room tone means the sound of an empty room, or a room in which all the actors are standing silently.

To a newbie, room tone means silence. To an audio professional, room tone means the subtle, low-volume sounds present in every room. Importantly, room tones are not all the same — every room has its own unique sound.

Room tone is normally recorded in every room used in a film. Typically, at the end of shooting a scene, the cast will stand silent for a few moments while the room tone is recorded. It is desirable to replicate the scene's exact background noise when recording room tone. In theory this means all the actors are still present, lights are on and the camera is rolling. In reality this doesn't usually happen — the actors may leave the scene first, the camera is often turned off, etc.

Room tone is used as a sound bed to accompany any new sound that is added to a scene in post-production, for example, re-recorded dialogue. If the new audio is recorded in a separate studio, the difference in background noise would be subtle but different enough to ruin the continuity. Placing the room tone underneath any new dialogue prevents this from happening (naturally you also need to avoid adding any new background noise with the new audio).

For those of you who care. This is what Wikipedia has to say about Presence or room tone.

In filmmaking and television production, presence, also known as room tone, is the "silence" recorded at a location or space when no dialogue is spoken.[1] Presence is similar to ambience, but is distinguished by a lack of explicit background noise.

Every location has a distinct presence created by the position of the microphone in relation to the space boundaries. A microphone placed in two different parts of the same room will record two distinct presences. This is because of the unique spatial relationship between the microphone and boundaries such as walls, ceilings, and floors, and other objects in a room.[2]
Presence is recorded during the production stage of filmmaking. It is used to help create the film sound track, where presence may be intercut with dialogue to smooth out any sound edit points. The sound track "going dead" would be perceived by the audience not as silence, but as a failure of the sound system. For this reason presence is normally recorded—like dialogue—in mono, with the microphone in the same position and orientation as the original dialogue recording.[3] In the sound edit, presence occupies the same track as the dialogue to which it applies.
