The special thing about The Last of Us' zombies is that they're not technically zombies. Functionally and effectively, that's what they are, but the Infected have a few wrinkles that make them different from your typical zombies- and that contributes significantly toward setting this entire universe apart from the sea of zombie-infested stories across all multimedia.

Taken over by a fungal brain infection, these infected are still people, and questions about whether or not some semblance of the person they once were is still inside pose complex moral quandaries. Whether or not The Last of Us will ever answer those questions remains to be seen- frankly, one of the best parts of its stories is that it leaves those answers up to its audience to figure out, but thinking about this stuff is still a fascinating mental exercise.
