Addendum.
Over the past 10 years we have increasingly become accustomed to rejecting "news" that doesn't match our world view. It doesn't matter whether that "news" comes via main stream media or something on the fringes, we treat it as lies, bias or propaganda if the information is contrary to our personal beliefs. This, more than anything else, is the problem. We've increasingly lost our ability to accept that sometimes we're wrong. Let that sink in. Sometimes. We. Are. Wrong.
Whatever our world view, there are times when we're wrong. Rejecting anything that suggests we're wrong has become the norm and rather than consider contradictory evidence in an even-handed way instead we double-down, potentially finding a source online to confirm our own view. Those sources are available for everything. No matter your world view, there are numerous sources that will support it. Think it's all a conspiracy? Someone will confirm that for you. Think it isn't? Someone will confirm that for you.
It's been described as the "post truth" era, and that's a very accurate description. Nobody cares about the truth if they disagree with it. Nuance is dead. Your career is over in 140 characters or less.
We've entered a pantomime world, "climate change is happening!" "OH NO IT ISN'T" "He's behind you" "BOOO HISSSS". We've lost our critical faculties, and it's not our fault.
"Web 2.0" has given us all the ability to say what we want, when we want. No fact checking, no accountability. These platforms built by those equal part naive Silicon Valley optimists and the new masters of the universe. Driven by data you have been targeted, tracked, segmented and manipulated. In the post truth era the message is only screamed, hopefully louder than those screaming in opposition. It's a pendulum - all the force pushing it in one direction is then countered by more force pushing the other way. It's out of control, and can't be stopped.
We've lost all faith in the watchmen of old. There have been so many incidents of the powerful abusing their position. Politicians, moguls, celebrities... members of each of these (for the most part) fraternities have proved themselves to be the worst of us. The rotten apples in every barrel. If we can't trust the watchmen, who do we trust? Nobody? Not quite. We're more likely to believe the people whose disgust matches our own. This then fuels these unregulated, often equally unprincipled, voices to strive to maintain their traffic. Needing ever more sensationalist headlines to draw us in. You thought clickbait was effective? Try new hateclicks! They're super effective.
So what to do?
First, refuse to be one-dimensional. You can be a green, conservative feminist. You can be an immigration-sceptic, free market socialist. Chances are you already are. Considering, the wheel of lunacy be wary of those trying to drag you further from neutral - not that neutral is desirable, but the further you allow yourself to be dragged the more objectively wrong you are likely to be.
Extremists see everything as black or white. You're with us or you're against us.
The truth is many shades of grey.
Beware those making money by driving you to hate The Other.
