Gaming isn’t particularly well-known for its variety from the outside. Many people, especially those who don’t really partake in the past-time, generally think of shooters, racing games, and gory fighters when they think of video games. While those more prolific genres certainly do make up quite a bulk of the medium, there are still plenty of other genres and sub-genres that fill out many of gaming’s lesser-known sectors.

Of those, detective games are particularly meaningful to those who enjoy them, and they come in many forms. Some of them could be called adventure games, or some could be referred to as mystery games. Some detective games are also technically part of, say action games, but just star a detective like the Batman Arkham series.

Regardless of what category any one detective game ultimately falls into, they all tend to entail a mystery that needs to be unraveled one way or another. Whether the core gameplay involves you putting the pieces together yourself, or just beating peoples’ heads in until those pieces are revealed, a good detective game tends to need a handful of important elements that make it add up to an interesting journey and ultimately a satisfying payoff in the end.
