What Makes Ghost in the Shell Feel Timeless | Traven Talks
There have always been a lot of classic pieces of media that, despite being immersed in everything surrounding them through my brothers’ excited ramblings and/or my friends heated arguments, I never actually experienced myself. I’ve done my best to get around to them over the years, and more often than not enjoyed them so much I kicked myself for not picking them up earlier. And, as you may have guessed from the title, one of these is 1995’s Ghost in the Shell.
Directed by Mamoru Oshii, produced by Production IG, and based on the manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow, Ghost in the Shell is a scifi thriller set in a near-future Japan that follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, team leader of Public Security Section 9, a law enforcement division focused on cybercrime, as she and fellow agents Batou and Togusa hunt down a notorious hacker known as the Puppet Master. However, as the investigation drags on, the Puppet Master’s tactics slowly make her question everything she thought she knew about herself and this cyberized world. Despite initially struggling at the box office, Ghost in the Shell became one of the first anime films to receive widespread critical acclaim in the US, and went on to be a major influence on the cyberpunk genre and cinema as a whole, with the likes of James Cameron, Steven Spielberg, and the Wachowskis citing it as a massive inspiration for their works.
But what I find so interesting about watching nowadays is just how timeless it is. It’s literally older than I am, and yet its their story feels just as impactful now as it did when it first came out, and in some ways, has only become more poignant with time. And today. I want to talk about what I think gives it this unique feeling . . .
