Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a movie that captivates from the get go through its art & animation, dense world & lore, and simple characters & story woven with complexity. But what appeals to me most is the melancholy that lingers throughout it. It’s defined by this haunting sense of sorrow, as its characters chase dreams they’ll never reach and fight for ideals they know are already dead, and today, I want to talk about how these tragic qualities bleed into nearly every part of this film, and why, for me, they make it work so well.
