Zombieland defined an era (2009 is an era) and paved the way for the subsequent zombie obsession that consumed Western culture for at least the next five years. A lot has changed since the last film was made and the character who drives discussion of that change in the sequel is Little Rock.
The young one of the group, played by Abigail Breslin, has also changed a lot since the first Zombieland. In the first one, she was only twelve years old, and relied on her unusual precocity for the energy and surprise of her acting (in Zombieland and in Little Miss Sunshine). The new film mirrors Breslin’s real coming-of-age, with the story centred around Little Rock leaving the nest.
Her assumed name, and those of the other characters, sheds light on the not-so-subtle subtext of the movie. The towns they’re from create a cross-section of non-metropolitan America. They spend time in the abandoned Obama-era White House, Graceland, the former home of Elvis, and a hippie-commune called Babylon that melts down guns into “peace medallions.” The cars they drive to get from place to place are also quintessentially American: Obama’s old presidential limo “The Beast,” a monster truck and a 1996 Pontiac Trans Sport. Little Rock’s journey away from, and back to, her chosen family is representative of something very relevant. Watch on to find out what it is.
