What Pays More? Your Art Skills or Your Design Skills?
Free Illustration Mini Workshop: https://www.thedrawingcodex.com/illustrationworkshop
This is an important idea to understand on a basic level if you are trying to make money with your art!
There are many more layers to this, and I can cover them in some future videos. The main take away here is that - the thing which often makes the difference between struggling to make ends meet on odd jobs with low paying clients, and making a decent income... is the design aspect of our craft... The ability to create art with functionality.
This does not mean 'selling out' or being a cog in a machine. While these sentiments are often felt by artists... the real goal is to get good enough at both the craft of making your art... and the art of self expression... and then to get good at understanding/meeting briefs and design direction... Once you get better at all three, you are much more likely to create client work which meets their needs and also expresses something personal.
Ideally we can create work that fits a brief and is interesting to us at the same time. One of the reasons I advocate for building a strong art foundation is because it makes meeting these two goals easier. The more control and flexibility you have... the easier it is to meet your pipeline/clients needs and your own.
There is always something interesting to learn on each job if we approach it in the right way.
Happy Drawing!
