What The Heck Is The Breakfast Club? Gameplay, Review, And First Impressions
What is it?
The Breakfast Club is a game that much as the name implies, is about making breakfast. The concept for this game first came from a glitch physics game from a game they made at the global game jam in January. The demo that we played is only made up of one level, but there are 6 levels planned so far with a players choice to determine the 7th.
Who made it?
This game was done by PlayWest. PlayWest is a student and graduate driven games studio in Bristol. They are also the creators of Kachiku64
Gameplay: In this game (based on the first level) your objective is to butter your toast (insert ed, edd,& eddy joke here). In order to complete your objective, you must navigate a piece of bread from a plate, to the toaster, and finally butter it. There is single player as well as multiplayer available in this game that will go up to 4 players. It is expected that in the levels to come that there will be different goals that are level specific. You can use both standard keyboard movements or joysticks to move around. The controls to this game are pretty simple, as in you only use your anolog sticks or wasd to move. Based on the copy that we played there is no other buttons used except the "A". Pressing start takes you to the level select, and there is no options available after you first start up except that.
Sound: There seemed to be only one song available as of the demo that we played. While it was pretty charming, it did get a little old fast. According to the developers there will be "9 tracks of food related chip-tune audio" done by Shinsuke Ito if it is indeed green-lit.
The art / graphics:
This game was made on the Unity Engine and deffinitely brings to mind I Am Bread somewhat when it comes to style. We did have issues trying to run this game in anything higher than 720 graphics. When the graphics were increased there was a giant increase in lag and the game became unstable. The game did freeze on us once as shown in the video.
Future:
According to the steam page, the developers would like to release this game sometime in the late summer of 2016. If you are going to EGX Rezzed in London, they will be showcasing the latest levels from April 7th-9th at the North Dock at The Tobacco Docks.
Overall:
We had a pretty good time in this game. The multiplayer concept of this game was really entertaining, and I do like how you can go up to 4 players on local co-op, we hope to see online co-op as well in the future. The physics were pretty fun, and the random earthquakes that occured made for some interesting gameplay. Overall this was a pretty fun game, but it did have it's fair share of issues. One of the main problems so far was the complete inablilty to actually toast the bread. I don't know if it was an issue with the hitbox (or if we just suck) but for the life of us we couldn't put the bread in the toaster! There were also a little bit of issues trying to get the game to run at higher graphics as well as a time when the game had a pretty big hicup (game almost crashed, but then continued as normal). The later levels do look like you will be making cooking different foods, and with the 7 levels that looked like are planned, it will add a ton of replayability.
This game really does look like it will be fairly enjoyable when it is finished, but right now there are a little bit of issues holding it back. Fix those, and it will be a really fun multiplayer to kick back with friends with for sure. Hopefully this game gets steam-lit and we can get the finished project. Thank you very much for your time~
