2005 was a transformative time for gaming. As the sixth generation of gaming consoles was closing out and the seventh was getting started, games were suddenly able to be absolutely massive compared to what had come before. The jump from Grand Theft Auto 3 to 4, at least on a technical level, was a colossal one.

I use a Rockstar example of course because no one gaming publisher really accentuated and harnessed those differences as well and with such an apparent contrast, as they did. While many associate Rockstar’s first decade of the new millennium with Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead games, which is perfectly understandable, there were also several other classics being churned out like Manhunt, Bully and The Warriors. The latter of which, despite being perhaps the most ambitious of the three, is talked about very little today.

Why this is, is a complete mystery that makes no sense. The Warriors was a very well-made brawler action adventure game with great characters and flowed nicely into the events of the cult classic film of the same name. The game, after many years in development, was received quite well for its story, graphics, and gameplay despite being released on the aging Xbox and PlayStation 2.

A list of acclaims that Rockstar games were and still are no stranger to. That said, if the game was such a hit and did such an outstanding job portraying the tone of the film while translating it seamlessly into a video game, why didn’t we ever see it become a series, or at least get a single proper follow up? What the hell happened to The Warriors?
