It’s commonly thought that if you went inside a black hole, your fate would be sealed. If this was true, then it would be impossible to tell what happened to you after you entered the black hole, since no information could escape the intense gravitational pull of the black hole and escape into space. But new research has shown that by combining Einstein’s general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics, two of the most important theories in modern physics, we can mathematically work out what would happen to an astronaut if they were unfortunate enough to fall into a black hole.
For years, scientists and sci-fi enthusiasts alike have debated what would happen if someone fell into a blackhole — an infinitely dense point in space with gravitational pull so strong that not even light can escape. Now, a team of physicists at Caltech has built on Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity and run the numbers to find out what would really happen if you went inside one of these gravity traps. Spoiler alert: You won’t die instantly, but you definitely won’t survive long enough to make it out alive without outside assistance.
An average star has about the same mass as our Sun, and we’re all familiar with what happens when a massive star runs out of fuel and collapses under its own weight; if it’s big enough it creates an immense explosion called a supernova that can be seen across the universe. But what would happen if you were unfortunate enough to be standing right next to the star when it collapsed? Where would you go? Would you die instantly, or would you somehow survive the passage through the newly created wormhole into another universe? What could you see? Would the laws of physics be different on the other side?
