Tears of the Kingdom has been one of the most highly anticipated games since its announcement in 2019, during a Nintendo direct. Although not much information has been shared about the game, it’s gained an immense amount of hype from fans, leading to it winning Most Anticipated Game at the game awards at the end of 2022.

The unfortunate part about this game is how long it has taken to release, causing concern for many players. We waited since 2019 (2017?) for a release that should’ve been fairly quick to produce, considering the assets, world, game engine, and physics were already made from breath of the wild. What took them so long?

Let’s start from the beginning of development. While most fans found out about the game in a 2019 Nintendo direct, this was obviously not the beginning of development. In December 2017, the Creating a Champion book was released, a really cool book which detailed the development process and lore of breath of the wild. In the last pages, eiji aonuma revealed that development for the next Zelda game had already begun. I find this quite impressive, because this is not long after the release of the final DLC pack for breath of the wild, meaning that they really didn’t take a
break between projects. This also kind of implies that they’ve had something planned already for this title. In fact, in an interview with kotaku in 2019, eiji aonuma explained to us how the birth of tears of the kingdom was from his team not being able to stop coming up with ideas for dlc, to the point where they ended up just making a sequel altogether. This is a similar story to the creation of Mario Galaxy 2, actually.

A few days before this report, the game was properly announced in a Nintendo direct, with very little information provided, other than the fact that ganondorf? Was back, theres a weird arm, and the game is in development.

After this it then took 2 YEARS for a new trailer to drop at e3 2021.two key details were announced this time, 1 being that the sky would play a big part in the story and gameplay of the game, and 2 being that the game would release in 2022. I always found it interesting how they left the release window so vague, not even willing to give
us the release month, but in hindsight, it makes sense. They just didn’t know how long it would take to complete development, and they couldn’t make any promises in case there was delay. Unfortunately they didn’t even manage to meet this release window. This is where fans really started to get annoyed, me included.
Its forgivable that there wasn’t any information released on the title for 2 years between 2019 and 2021, we can wait, as it only means that theyre putting time into making the game even better. But then delaying it further to 2023?

This began to worry people as a sequel to a game shouldn’t end up taking longer than the original. As previously stated, they had the game engine, physics and assets from breath of the wild to work with, so its not like they were building a game from the ground up. Alongside only 2 teasers being announced at the time, they really did have us left in the dark.

One argument for the delay is obviously Covid19. This affected basically every company, and businesses like Nintendo which are situated in Japan really struggled to adjust due to their work culture and infrastructure in the country. This is why we barely got any Nintendo games or directs in 2020, btw.

The problem with this argument is that the release date was given AFTER the effects of 2020. Which means not only had they gone pretty much back to normal development, but they were able to give a release window with some leeway in case things took a turn for the worse again, and yet the release date still wasn’t met.

So, what took this game so long? Will it forever be a mystery? I think that we can theorise
and make some educated guesses on the cause….
