When A Meteor Almost Hit An F-4 Phantom II Over Vietnam In 1967 #shorts
On December 14, 1967, an SR-71 Blackbird was preparing to cross North Vietnam, to collect intelligence details. An F-4 Phantom II, armed with missiles, was in the skies to escort it because the Strategic Air Command ordered that every SR-71 flight would have fighter cover. Surprisingly, the F-4 crew had no idea of the precise time of the passage or anything else. So, the F-4's pilot decided to take in the view and gaze at the stars, when over the canopy of the Phantom, a brilliant purple fireball appears out of nowhere. What little night vision the pilot has developed was ruined by the blazing light, which made the cockpit appear as bright as day. On its Mach 3 run, has the Blackbird blown up overhead? Was a SAM launched at us? How about an air-to-air missile fired at our Phantom? The pilot's mind examined each of these scenarios, ruled them out, and then provided the answer. It is a meteor, bigger and brighter than any I have ever seen. The atmosphere of the planet is being penetrated by a rock that is most likely the size of a grapefruit. Meteors are visible to everyone who flies at night. Leave it alone, his navigator advised him.
