4,701On October 11, 1973, a flight of Kurnasses, an Israeli modification of the F-4 Phantom II, was tasked with suppressing enemy air defense, in the southwest of Syria. In spite of bad weather, the F-4 Phantoms infiltrated at low altitude and continued with the mission from medium altitude. They drew up earlier than expected when AAA fire began to open up on them as they arrived. This was followed by the launch of surface-to-air missiles. A lot more missiles were launched, but they only managed to avoid three of them before breaking. They dispersed during the intermission. They all engaged in a life-or-death struggle with the Syrian SAMs. When the fourth rocket came closer, the Phantoms were already moving too slowly. They were able to slightly accelerate and pull up. They forcefully pushed down as the missile followed them and completed its ascent to 30,000 feet in the air. One of the pilots was able to locate the target while dodging missiles and hit it. They managed to escape 20 SA-3 missiles and return to Israel in the end. Israel viewed this mission, which was a complete failure, as a victory because Syria wasted a lot of missiles but afterwards received a lot more from Russia.
