I do believe the Tau was first introduced back in 2001 in the 3rd edition or I might be wrong lol.

It was hated by some due to
in a setting that is grimdark, here comes an actual good guys
Felt like some mecha from gundam (aka anime).
No Glorious Melee Combat
Cooperative and Optimistic Faction
etc etc etc

Well eventually the Tau faction was changed to fit more grimdark but yeah when they first came to warhammer 40k, it was not great for some players.
