Theres usually about 5 things you can upgrade. Either the GPU, CPU, RAM, Storage and rarely the Motherboard.

The first thing you want to try to upgrade is the ram. Its the easiest upgrade you can do and if you only have 4gb ram you will need to upgrade either now or sooner or later to 8gb.

-What is your main reason for wanting an upgrade?
Are trying to purchase a desktop or laptop and don’t know how much upgrades you’ll need? If your only gonna play games and do the basics on your computer 8gb ram is perfect for you along with 256gb storage.

-Basic needs or professional needs:
But if you are gonna be a working professional or a student working with 3d modeling or video editing its highly recommended that you grab 16gb of ram and additional storage up to 512gb or more.

-The most important upgrade:
for gaming will always be the GPU the graphics card, its the computer component thats in charge of all the video output that give you your graphics.

-Least important upgrade:
Tends to be the cpu, for most people they really don’t need to upgrade the cpu unless they are working professionals. Other wise an i3 or an i5 will work out great for most scenarios. Some gamers live and die by playing there games on high end components like the i7 cpu but its not necessary for most gamers.

-Upgrading the Motherboard:
You tend to upgrade this component if you literally cannot upgrade anything else. The motherboard links all your components together and it provide the support. For instance If your computer is too old to upgrade its because the motherboard doesn’t allow it. Upgrading the motherboard can allow for future upgrade like cpu, ram, cpu and storage.
