But he only became the Hunter Vanguard mentor after the unfortunate demise of his friend Andal Brask. Andal was the Vanguard before Cayde, who had lost a bet against him over who could successfully hunt down Taniks the Scarred. Feeling guilt over Andal's fall at Tanik's hand Cayde took up his friend's cloak and became his replacement.
