Why the aircraft carriers are called CV, and Not AC? All you need to know is that when U.S. navy first start commissioning the aircraft carriers in early 20th century, the hull designation AC was already in use for Colliers or auxiliary colliers. Even the first US carrier the USS Langley CV-1, was converted from a collier, the USS Jupiter AC-3. But they could've use CA, carrier aircraft, right? But CA was also in use by Armoured cruisers, and later for heavy cruisers. According to one unproven theory, because the aircraft carriers were originally seen as cruisers, so the “C” derives from the Cruiser designation, and the “V” comes from the French word voler, meaning "to fly, or Volplane, meaning aircraft, which ship was intended to carry, so CV simply means Aviation Cruisers or flight cruisers. The Navy stopped using cruiser hulls for Carriers in the 1940’s, and instead created dedicated Fleet carrier hulls, similar to the ones we see today. Some say that V means fixed wing heavier than air aviation, making CV means Carrier fixed wing today. The modern carriers are abbreviated as CVNs or Carrier fixed wing nuclear, meaning the Carrier is powered by nuclear propulsion.
