The American Civil War was of massive significance for a lot of reasons, and the global imperial powers of Europe took keen obvious interest in it. But alongside the diplomats and politicians they sent to the Union and Confederacy to keep or establish relations, they also sent soldiers. Not as an expeditionary force, but an observatory force. Officers from Britain, France, Prussia, and many other countries flocked to North America to simply watch the show- some of them officially, some as simple tourists. But why? Why did the Europeans care so much about the US Civil War?
