The Shortest War In History

The shortest war in history lasted only 38 minutes. The Anglo-Zanzibar War was fought between the United Kingdom and the Zanzibar Sultanate on 27 August 1896. The conflict lasted between 38 and 45 minutes, making it the shortest recorded war in history. The war started after the death of the previous sultan, because Zanzibari Prince Khalid bin Barghash, refused to accept the British Empire’s preferred successor. The prince Khalid called up his palace guard and barricaded himself inside the palace. He and his troops were instructed to exit the palace and surrender their arms by 9:00 am on August 27. Prince Khalid refused to do so, and at 9:00 am, British army opened fire on the palace, which was quickly set on fire. After 40 minutes and five hundred casualties on Khalid’s soldiers, the British ceased fire after Prince Khalid had surrendered, and the war was over.
