Why Does BACKGAMMON Have 24 Points and 15 Checkers?
Do you know why backgammon, one of the world’s oldest board games, uses 15 checkers a side and 24 points or spaces? It’s not arbitrary. The game originated in Persia more than 5000 years ago. The 24 points are thought to represent the 24 hours in a day, the 12 points on each side reflect the 12 months of the year, while the 30 combined checkers represent the number of days in a typical month. Further, the light and dark sides represent the day and the night. You also see this duality in the dice. Is all of this true? It would be hard to prove in a court of law, but it certainly seems like Backgammon was designed very intentionally. So now you know.
