Two of the three games in the forthcoming Spyro Reignited Trilogy must be downloaded and are not on the retail disc, according to the game’s official site. The news has upset some fans.

Spyro the Dragon is on the disc. Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon must be downloaded. We’ve reached out to Activision for an explanation. A comment given to PlayStation Lifestyle yesterday didn’t answer the question of why this was necessary. “As with most games today, downloading an update after purchase is quite common. The language on packaging and on the web is to let players know the requirements for Spyro Reignited Trilogy,” the statement said.

Redditors who noticed the fine print speculated that developers could be working on remastering these two games right up to the anthology’s Sept. 21 launch date on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This has become a common practice, especially for sports titles developed on an annual cycle.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy was announced on April 5. Toys For Bob, which created the Skylanders franchise, is handling the three games’ remastering, which Activision says are being “remade from the ground up.”
