Why Mission Vao's Death is TOO BRUTAL for the KOTOR Remake...
What Happens if you force Zalbaar to MURDER a helpless Mission Vaoin Knights of the Old Republic? (KOTOR)
To many, the most heartbreaking deaths in KOTOR are potentially committed at the player's hand.
From killing a fallen Juhani in her dark grove, thanks to the lies of the Jedi. And having her one time lover attack you in her grief
Or Murdering the old curmudgeon, Jolee Bindo atop the Rakatan temple, in a manner that eerily parallels his own final battle with his wife.
However, one death in particular, that fans universally agree is the lowest act for Revan. That is of course, when a newly Fallen Dark Lord convinces Zaalbar to murder his long time companion, a 14 year old twi’lek & former fellow street urchin Mission Vao.
But what is the deeper, more gut wrenching ramification?
Well, here is the Hidden Heartbreak of Killing Mission Vao

Street Urchin Origins:
To understand HOW Revan could ever hope to undermine Mission’s relationship with Zalbaar to the point of betrayal & murder. We must first explore the unlikely pairs history together.
1.When first meeting Mission we find her being confronted by some low level thugs in the Lower city cantina.
Her mouth nearly costs her her life, save for Zalbaars timely intervention…
2. We can when the duo join the party, learn through Missions dialogue how the unlikely pair become inseparable.
Although mission mentions Zalbaars checkered past that forced him to leave Kashyyk, first lets further examine the pairs interactions. As Zalbaar is one the few KOTOR companions without his own dialogue driven side quest that we later stumble upon on his home world, instead he will share a variety of small dialogue interactions with Mission, in which she treats him more like a pet (possibly due to her age & naivety) rather than a proud wookiee warrior saying:
However, the most poignant paradigm shift of power from Mission, to Revan, is not readily apparent at the time. It occurs in the Rakghoul infested Lower City, when your party happens upon an errant Mission who was separated from a lost Zalbaar & to her credit, is looking to rescue him, this time around.
Although Mission spearheaded the rescue… mission, freeing Z from the clutches of Gamorrean slavers. Z is quick to realize it was not her battle prowess that liberated him, or perhaps saw her flee helplessly. Regardless, he pledges his life to Revan, with an unbreakable Life debt, as Mission explains.
Its later in the Rakghoul infested Lower City, do we happen upon an errant Mission who was separated from a lost Zalbaar & to her credit, is looking to rescue him, this time around.
With a life debt of a Wookiee now pledged to Revan, the dynamic shifts slightly but more importantly we from the game, that Zalbaar & missions interactions show how she is happy to taunt & disrespect the once proud wookiee, and treat him more like a sibling or I daresay pet in their interactions.
However, when pressed we further learn of the tragic inception of the duos bond from Mission
Shadowlands Shenanigans:
The life debt & gratitude of our new Wookiee companion, is only further cemented when we travel to his homeworld of Kashyyyk. Its there we learn not only is Zalbaar a disgraced member cast out from his tribe. But as a sidequest, revan can somewhat restore his honor with his people, dealing with the local Czerka problem & his families infighting.
The Unknown World:
So, its probably no surprise, later when revan remembers his true sith heritage & is able to reclaim his dark mantle, by first killing any light side companions, unwilling to retain their allegiance, such as Jolee Bindo & Juhani atop the Rakatan Temple.
When a dark Bastila & revan return to the hawk, fresh from the slaughter, Zalbaar like som other crew members are somewhat conflicted. However, even still with his loyalty, the scenario plays out in many different ways. Such as:
Zalbaar broken by Revans will, stands over his lifeless friends body grieving & his sense of loyalty & inner turmoil due to his life debt, roiling withing. However, he still solemnly accompanying his companions to the Star Forge towards the final battle, leaving Mission Vaos corpse facedown & forgotten in the Unknown worlds sands.
