Why SHUTTER ISLAND Nearly Broke Me (Insanity + Ending) EXPLAINED
Shutter Island is a head-scratcher. If you’re wondering about the double characters, the characters that didn’t exist, or that bizarre shot where a patient puts an invisible glass of water up to her mouth, you’re doing exactly what Scorsese had hoped: questioning reality and engaging in epistemological questions about how we understand the world around us.
Back in the mid-20th century, J. R. R. Tolkien warned us that “of his own sanity no man may securely judge”. This epistemological argument is exactly what Martin Scorsese’s 2010 film Shutter Island wraps itself around. -- Centring its story around a mentally unstable character, we consistently have to double-take as the film’s narrative warps in on itself, and reality turns out to be something wholly different to what it first seemed.
