Why Sir Alf Ramsey had to leave England
October 17, 1973: the night where if it wasn’t obvious beforehand, then it certainly was now—England were no longer among the world’s elite.
Their failure to defend their world crown in the baking Mexican heat against the likes of the Brazilians and West Germans could be easily explained away.
Some of the more optimistic amongst the Three Lions faithful might have retained hope despite being outplayed in a EURO 1972 qualifier by West Germany at Wembley, since they went onto win the competition later that year.
However, with a win needed at Wembley over Poland—a team who hadn’t qualified for a World Cup in 34 years—England were supposed to coast to the tournament.
Instead, an inspired performance by Jan Tomaszewski ended the international careers of manager Sir Alf Ramsey and captain Bobby Moore and began a decade without a World Cup for the Three Lions.
