Terry Venables should've been England manager sooner
England were on an all too rare high of a World Cup semi-final, filled with incredible moments.
From Bobby Robson’s touchline jig, David Platt’s pirouetted volley against Belgium, a glut of Gary Lineker goals and Gazza’s tears of Turin, little did we know: it would be the last joyful England footballing experience for some time.
The next came under the management of Terry Venables and Paul Gascoigne’s mesmeric goal against Scotland at EURO 96.
In those long six years was the setback of a European Championship group stage exit and the disastrous failure to qualify for the 1994 World Cup under Graham Taylor.
Terry Venables took on what had become ‘The Impossible Job’ after Taylor. In 1990, after a managerial career that had taken him Selhurst Park and Loftus Road to the Camp Nou, the European Cup final as well as Spurs, Venables was touted for the England post.
