Why KEPA should've come ON in the 2022 FA Cup final
February 24, 2019: League Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City, and it was patently obvious that this game was destined for the penalty shootout. Willy Caballero was ready to enter the field of play in stoppage time but Kepa Arrizabalaga refused. It belittled manager Maurizio Sarri, who would depart months later, and Chelsea lost in the shootout.
Three years and three days later, Chelsea played out another goalless League Cup final and were set for a penalty shootout. A Chelsea manager prepared a 120th minute substitute again, this time inserting Kepa Arrizabalaga onto the field. He didn’t save any of the 11 penalties he faced, and blazed his over the bar.
Three months later: Chelsea, Liverpool, goalless cup final yet again, 120th minute substitution yet again—but this time not involving a goalkeeper. Instead, Edouard Mendy stayed in goal, only saved one penalty and Chelsea lost another cup final.
Yes: three Kepa Arrizabalaga alternate histories back to back to back!
