Submarine cables are the main choice for interconnecting continents and enabling the global internet due to their efficiency in transmitting large volumes of data with high speed and stability. Compared to satellites, they offer lower latency, as signals travel much shorter distances on the ocean floor rather than traveling to geostationary orbits. In addition, fiber optics are immune to weather and electromagnetic interference, ensuring a more reliable connection even in adverse conditions. The transmission capacity of submarine cables is also significantly higher, reaching rates of terabits per second, while satellites have considerable limitations in this regard.

Another determining factor is cost-effectiveness. Although installing submarine cables is complex and expensive, it is still more affordable than launching and maintaining satellites in orbit. Cables are also more durable, with an average lifespan of 25 years, while satellites typically operate for around 10 years. Finally, the cable infrastructure allows for the continuous expansion of the global network, meeting the growing demand for services such as high-resolution streaming and video conferencing, something that would be impractical with satellites alone.
