About this series:

This is not a review. Just yours truly showing and telling you why you should definitely play this game. Only the games categorized as MASTERPIECE in my books make it through to this series. Hope you enjoy! Leave a comment below, thanks.

Inside

The game starts...where are we? who is this boy? what is happening?! This game tells you nothing and at the same time it tells you everything...if you just keep your eyes open. All I can tell you is that MAN you are in for an adventure with a CAPITAL A!

Controls - the responsiveness of every button press and how the controls create the sense of weight to the character you control. Also worth the mention is the simplicity of the controls. You have movement to left, right, up and down (no crouch), jump and a button for grabbing onto things. The boy reacts to the game environment according to the current situation (example: dudes try to find you in the forest).

The art direction - simple, very grim but at the same time beautiful. Everything you see tells something about the world and story you are currently experiencing. Everything you see is there for a reason.

Animation - the smoothness of the movement (of the boy and the NPCs) is just mind blowing to witness and I think it’s one of IF NOT the biggest single thing that makes this game look and play as well as it does. The animation is also a big reason why the characters in the game feel so lifelike even when no one has a frigging face!

Big part of the liveliness of the game world comes also from the sound design. How can something so dead sound so alive? How the game uses sound ques is just awesome to witness (example: the chase scene where the car stops in the forest and the door opens).

The graphics - especially the lighting...WOW! (example: boy jumps in the water after been chased by ravenous dogs).

The camera - how the camera moves in the 2D world creating a sense of scale. (example: same as above).

How the simplistic controls are used to make puzzles as creative as they are (example “the haystack puzzle”).

How the one big level that this game is keeps evolving in front your eyes (example: moving on from the “haystack” puzzle).

The game world and the game world alone tells the story. There is no dialog to be heard or any kind of written text to be seen.

What awaits you is an 3-4 hour long adventure full of great set pieces, puzzles, discovery and wonder.
