2022 Academy Awards Will Smith–Chris Rock slapping incident:
During the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, 2022, Smith walked on stage and slapped presenter and comedian Chris Rock after Rock joked about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head with reference to the film G.I. Jane. Smith then returned to his seat and yelled to Rock twice, saying, "Keep my wife's name out your fucking mouth!" Later in the night, Smith was named Best Actor for King Richard and apologized to the Academy of Motion Pictures and the other nominees, but not to Rock, in his acceptance speech. His acceptance speech, in which he appealed to God, calling on him to do "crazy things" in the name of love, was described as a "dangerous, self-serving cant" by the British magazine The Economist, which also noted that he received a partial standing ovation from the audience for his comments.

Following public backlash, Smith issued a formal apology, explaining that he believed Rock's joke referenced his wife's "medical condition," which, according to Smith, "was too much for me to bear, and I reacted emotionally." Previous to this, Pinkett Smith had been diagnosed with alopecia in 2018 and would later shave her head due to the condition. The incident was condemned by ABC, The Academy, and the Screen Actors Guild and is currently being reviewed by the Academy's Board of Governors. Many in the film industry have condemned Smith's behavior including Academy Governor Whoopi Goldberg, who stated there would be "Big consequences because nobody is okay with what happened". The organization released a statement saying, "The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law. Rock declined to press charges against Smith, with the Los Angeles Police Department stating that it would not be opening an investigation unless Rock changed his mind and decided to file a police report.
