Will the Tarantino Scandal Hurt His Next Project?
Rumors are starting to circulate that Quentin Tarantino’s 1969 movie might be in trouble with the studio and with the public. Tarantino had already received a less than enthusiastic response to his statement about Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault allegations when that news broke a few weeks ago. Then Uma Thurman’ s interview with the New York Times about her accident on Kill Bill and the accompanying video really showed a director who did not take care of his lead actress. Also, reports surfaced that he also choked Uma and spat on her face for a scene which he did not deny. Uma did try to alleviate some of the backlash against Tarantino in subsequent interviews when she stated that he got her the video footage that showed her accident on that set. But then a 2003 interview with Howard Stern surfaced showing a Tarantino defending Roman Polanski against the 13-year old girl who he was convicted of raping. All of this combined with a ballooning budget for his 1969 Manson movie (some outlets quote the projected budget to be $200 million) have led reports to come out that Sony is having second thoughts about the project.
Kristian Harloff and John Rocha sit down to discuss these news reports and their thoughts on the situation. They explore if Tarantino’s responses left something to be desired and what his responsibility might have been in these situations. Also, they wonder what the public’s taste for a Tarantino film might be at the moment and if a studio should touch this project or even make it at all at this point.
