AdBlockPlus is an extension for your browser that will stop ads considered 'obtrusive'. So which ads qualify? Well, in the configuration pages for AdBlockPlus, you can examine what those are and even make changes to which sites are blocked.

AdBlockPlus will work on Windows 7, 8 or 10 and all major browsers except Edge. A working version is available for Edge on systems that are running the Insider version of Windows 10. In July when Windows 10 Anniversary Update is released, all Windows 10 users will be able to use AdBlockPlus in Edge.
