some good vimrc settings

set belloff=all
syntax on
filetype indent on
filetype indent plugin on
set backspace=indent,eol,start


the first one turns off the bell
the second is for syntax colouring
thirdly we have autoindentation for code

the set backspace ensures that backspacing for windows deletes characters as expected
