ABOUT THIS VIDEO: The OODA Loop was developed by military strategist and United States Air Force Colonel John Boyd. It stands for "observe, orient, decide, act." For example, in a self-defense situation:

OBSERVE - Someone is throwing a hook punch at you.
ORIENT - Where are you in relation to them? How fast is the punch coming? Etc.
DECIDE - "I'll block with this while hitting with that."
ACT - Execute your chosen method of counterattack

The thing is, you are at a disadvantage because the attacker is on the last step of the cycle, while you are on the first. Visually, it could be represented like this:

ATTACKER YOU
Observe
Orient
Decide
Act Observe
Orient
Decide

Act

You are three steps behind them! Also, there is no way you can ever be on step 4 at the same time as them, because you cannot read their minds, so you don't know they have decided to attack until they ARE attacking.

The best you can do is find a way to skip "orient" and "decide."

Watch and learn more.
