WipEout 2097 - Gare d'Europa (Rapier) 4K Upscaled! (ePSXe)
108WipEout 2097 was my gateway drug into the WipEout series and one of the main reasons I jumped ship from the Sega Saturn to a PS1 (along with Resident Evil 2). Yeah, the Saturn had its own version of WipEout 2097, but it looked shit next to the PS1 version and it was missing all the awesome licensed music, although CoLD SToRAGE aka. Tim Wright, always provides an awesome non-licensed alternative.
As the WipEout 2097 track that came on the PS1 demo disc, Gare d'Europa has long been etched in my memory and remains to this day probably my favourite track in any WipEout game ever. I love all the little details on it, like the rain, thunder and lightning, and the red and the dark tunnels, where it gets to a point you can almost only see your ship's vapour trail. And the monorail train thingy that goes around the Gare. Maahn, I love this track!
I'm playing the game on ePSXe emulator here with a load of the options turned on to smooth out and upscale the rough looking PS1 polygons and sweet Jebus, it looks awesome like this. I've then further upscaled the 1080p video to 4K to get the superior VP9 codec and stop YouTube compressing the video and turning it into a big mass of graphical artefact.
I actually just started playing this to obtain a bit of footage of the start of the track for another video I'm working on at the moment, but whilst I was at it I thought, 'Fuck it, let's go for Gold' and put my (very) rusty 2097 reflexes back to good use on the second fastest difficulty. That 1st place AI ship was being a right pain-in-the-arse on the final lap (fucking missile-ing me twice right at the start of it!) but, heh heh, payback's a bitch as they say...
I'm actually using the American WipEout XL ISO here, which has got the benefit of a higher frame rate compared to it's UK/Euro cousin (30fps vs 25fps) and ever so slightly easier handling. I've still called it 2097 in the title though, because it's a much cooler name than XL.
