WipEout 3: SE Vs WipEout 2097 - Gare d'Europa
Don't know why I haven't thought of doing this comparison before.
Wipeout 2097 is probably my favourite Wipeout game in the whole series (I love them all though, apart from Wipeout Fusion on the PS2 which I gave a bit of a wide berth - I just didn't like the look of it). 2097 though, was the one that at the time, to me, was the most striking, with it's awesome visuals and amazing techno soundtrack. Gare d'Europa is my favourite track in the game, I think this is partially down to the fact that is was the one that came on the demo disc I got with my PS1 and was my first real taster of Wipeout, so for that reason alone I think it's always got a special place in my heart.
Of the two versions here, I think Wipeout 2097 is still my favourite. I think the fact that the visuals are darker just gives the game a far more gritty and moody appearance. Particularly, that blue and then the red tunnel right at the start of the track. I think the dark blue vapour trails from the ships in 2097 also look better than the multicoloured affairs in 3. I also think the Feisar ship looks better in 2097 than 3.
Don't get me wrong though, I still like 3 a lot (especially the amount of content packed into the Special Edition version) and think it's a fine looking game, but on the whole, aesthetically, I prefer Wipeout 2097.
These are both being played on ePSXe 170 (PS1 emulator) upscaled into HD with the emulators's high resolution textures setting turned on and the maximum texture filtering option on to extend and smooth the graphics - and they both look amazing for it.
