Wipeout - DOS vs. PlayStation Comparison
9A few notes:
The DOS version was running on my Pentium 4 PC running Windows 2000. Not the most ideal setup for a DOS game, but the specs are above and beyond what the game requires and it still runs weirdly. The menus are extremely sped-up, yet the gameplay is super slow. This happens on DOSBox, too.
On the PlayStation, I was running the NTSC-J version, in case that makes a difference.
The lighting is far, far better on the PS1, meaning it's easier to tell where the track's going than on DOS. The draw distance is also a lot better.
Weirdly, there are minor graphical differences - the ship being the main one, but also a few of the GUI elements are different colours, and the speedometer is a different shape as well.
Something you may not notice from this video is that the AI didn't seem up to much on DOS. Whereas on PS1, the other ships were firing missiles at me and trying to ram my ship and cut me off, the other racers on DOS were just out for a Sunday drive. Maybe I just got lucky, or maybe it's a symptom of the CPU being way too fast for this game...who knows?
Anyway, the conclusion: play STUN Runner instead. (Only kidding.)
