In this YouTube #Shorts episode, we take a look at the just-arrived Tribute 64 wireless and Legacy 16 wired and wireless controllers from Retro-bit.

In recent years, Retro-Bit has done a great job with 3rd party controllers for multiple retro and modern game systems. The Platinum Series features a more premium feel and performance over standard controllers and the newest members of the series are designed for the Super NES, Super Famicom, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Switch, and USB devices. When I last attended the Portland Retro Gaming Expo in 2019, I interviewed Richard from Retro-Bit who showed off their, at the time in development, 2.4 GHz Wireless version of their popular Tribute64 controller. While their initial plans were to have it released in 2020, the global pandemic caused significant delays. Thankfully, they never stopped working on the project and the results are what you see here, the Tribute64 2.4 GHz Wireless Edition.

There are several refinements and enhancements to this version of the Tribute64 versus the version that I last saw. The shoulder buttons are in a more traditional location compared to what I had originally seen, and the overall layout has been finalized. There will be three different colors of this controller, a traditional Gray, Atomic Purple, and a very special limited edition available only at select retailers.

On the Legacy 16 controllers, there are two colors on each of configurations, white and onyx black. Each controller features home and screenshot buttons, A/B/X/Y face buttons shaped like the Super Famicom buttons, L/R shoulder buttons, and a set of ZL/ZR buttons as well. This means that, not only can you use these controllers with the Super Famicom and Super Nintendo, but also with Steam, RetroPis, emulation systems, PCs, and Macs. Both controllers are built with D-input and X-input support to play fluently on Switch, and other USB-enabled devices allowing you to truly experience a modern way of retro gaming with a legacy of a controller.

The Legacy16 Wireless has a number of great features on it. One of which is the inclusion of twin analog sticks, making it ideal for use on a variety of systems and games beyond the 16-bit era. To charge the controller itself, Retro-bit has gone with a USB-C connector for faster charging. I LOVE to see this! Two dongles are included as well, one for a SNES/Super Famicom controller port and one for a USB port. Each of these dongles feature a pairing button to easily go from one port to the other, and back again. The dongles do feature Micro USB connections for use if or when there are firmware updates in the future.

On the USB Legacy16, I am pleased to see that this will be featuring a 10-foot long cord. This is wonderful to see, and I really hope we're done seeing 4-to-6 foot long cords on wired controllers ever again. I was pleasantly surprised to see the inclusion of the extra buttons on this controller, as typically those are reserved for wireless controllers. Now, the USB version does omit the analog sticks that the 2.4GHz version has, but I'm not sure they will be missed.

Make sure you are subscribed to the channel as we will be posting unboxing and review vides for all these controllers separately. If you have a game you'd like to have featured, let me know and I will do the best that I can.
