Withering Rooms is a Horror Roguelite Metroidvania game that just came out on April 5th, 2024. It was developed by Moonless Formless, and produced by Perp Games. It can be found on Steam at: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2006140/Withering_Rooms/

I stumbled across this game looking up new Rogues that have come out recently, and being a HUGE fan of horror games, I ABSOLUTELY had to give this game a try after I saw the videos of it on Steam! Well, I can honestly say I am very pleased with myself that I did! It is definitely something different than your everyday type of Rogue game, and I cannot wait to play more!

In Withering Rooms, you take over a girl named Nightingale, and you wake up in a place called "The Dream". All I know about the plot so far is that it seems you have to find a way to wake up possibly, but I am guessing there is going to be a big twist at the end. Death is not the end, as this is a Rogue, and each time you die, you will get a little better at surviving.

There are ways to help improve your odds of survival. There is equipment such as weapons, armor and rings that all grant you ways to fight your enemies, or ways to protect you from them. There are some status ailments in the game, like bleed and poison, and the armor and rings can help negate these damage types, which will slowly kill you off if you do not have a means of curing them. You also find items like black candles, health kits, food, scrolls, and such that will aid you in different ways, whether it is in combat, or to heal yourself.

Now, for one of the biggest things that makes me very interested in playing the game even more: the Cursed status effect. This 100% reminds me of the sanity mechanic in Eternal Darkness! If your Curse gets too high, you get Curse Rot, and will start seeing enemies that aren't there, as well as rooms changing (ie. bookshelves and tables becoming torture devices!). HOWEVER. being cursed DOES have positive effects as well! It allows you to see spirits that want to kill you, as well as helping you find secrets. You just have to be careful, as Curse Rot WILL kill you, so try to always keep a black candle on hand.

The Metroidvania aspect comes in the form of having to find specific items to advance. This can be keys, a lamp, or even enemy body parts to sacrifice after you kill them. As you find these new items, new ways will open up to you, like secret passages behind bookcases, or getting the lamp, which will allow you to see in the basement. This promotes searching everything, and trying to actually kill enemies to grab any items they have. Killing enemies also yields body parts, which can be used as sacrifices to level up your health and resistances permanently. VERY useful, so kill as many enemies as you can!

Combat CAN be a bit stiff. This is honestly my only (very small) complaint, and even then, it isn't terrible. You basically have a light attack, heavy attack and evade. I don't know if there is anything else beyond that, like blocking or parrying, but it doesn't take long to get use to fighting. Different weapons weigh differently, and as such, have faster or slower attack speeds. Getting use to the different enemies and how they attack will help a ton, and after killing an enemy, searching their corpse will give you info on them that helps you figure out easier ways to take them out, what they are weak/resistant to, and other info.

If you are a fan of Horror, Rogues, Metroidvania games, or any combination of those, DEFINITELY give this game a go! I found it very hard to stop playing, and I am looking forward to jumping back into it when I have the time! I will try to cover this game from start to finish, and will post my sessions as I play. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do if you grab it!
